Description

In this lesson, the students will learn about the grammar of have/had to and practice their listening and reading for detail skills. The students will check their knowledge with controlled written and oral practices (fill the gaps).

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of "have to and had to" in the context of the world of work by listening and reading

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed listening and reading practice in a context of employment

Procedure

Lead-in (4-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Set 3 pictures on the white board of a doctor, a taxi driver and a pilot. Ask the students who do they think these people are.

Pre-Reading and Listening (8-13 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible. To generate interest in the topic

Ask questions: Who you think has to wear special clothes at work? Who doesn't? Who have to has a driving licence to work? Who didn't has to study a long time to get that job? Who has to be good at mathematics?

While Listening (8-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Make 3 true sentences using have to for each job Check with partner

Post-Listening (8-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation by asking questions on the CD Ex 6: fill the gaps then correct If time, ex 7 and Back to the board
