In this lesson, students will be able to learn how to talk about finished actions using Simple Past and the time expressions pertaining to this tense

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Simple Past Tense in the context of Travel

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of travel

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask questions about their favourite season for travels showing pictures from winter/summer holdiay resorts Asking them if they prefer 5-star hotels or camping

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Hand out text and ask them to skim for the main idea for 2 minutes

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

After eliciting the main idea ot the paragraph, ask them to get in pairs and underline verbs with a past meaning.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Elicit the examples on the board and highlight past verb forms, regular and irregular verbs as well as Simple Past time expressions

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ask concept questions: -Did they do there in the summer? Yes -Are they still there now? No -Is the action going on? No -So can we say we use the Simple Past to talk about actions which happened and finished in the past?

Semi-controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • Provide in-depth understanding of the target language through more practice

Hand out a gap filling exercise (in the same context of travel) and ask students to fill in the gaps. Peer check after 5 minutes Elicit answers on the board. Highlight MFPA on the board if necessary.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ask them to talk about their travel experiences in pairs. They report the experiences of their partners to the whole class. If there is time, they could vote for the most exciting story.
