Elementary (A1-A2) level

Description

In this lesson, students learn rooms & furniture vocabulary. The lesson starts with pictures to activate prior knowledge of context vocabulary. This is followed by matching pictures with words. Then, Ss practice vocabulary through highlighting and clarification. Finally, there is some controlled practice through listening and there are some semi-controlled and free activities.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of rooms and furniture in the context of describing and renting a house

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of rooms and furniture as well as listening for specific information

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show them a picture of a house plan to elicit 'rooms' and 'furniture'.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Stick some furniture pictures on the wall and ask Ss to look around and talk about what they see in pairs and match the pictures with some words. The they check their answers in a bigger group followed by a provided answer key on the IWB. After that, in their groups or pairs they add two more furniture words to each room.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

In this stage, the T goes through pronunciation with choral and individual drilling. pointing word stress maybe even eliciting a few more words.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

the T plays a recording and they listen for specific information. They need to listen and write the name of every piece of funiture or room that they can hear. They check in groups and listen again. the T gives them the audioscript to check their answers.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

in this stage they play a game-like activity. They need to work in pairs and imagine themselves in a room and tell their partners all the pieces of furniture they can see in a room and the other partner has to guess which room they are in. Then they switch. the teacher demos twice.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In this activity they listen and read about their teacher's dream house and then to another person's dream house. after that they need to talk to their partners and describe their dream house for him or her. the teacher monitors and supports. the delayed feedback is provided.
