Description

In this session, students will practice reading for gist, specific information, details in the context of living history. They will also practice speaking throughout the class. First, they will read a short introduction, and read for gist. Then they will read the main text, read for gist to see if their answers are in it. Then do match activity to read for specific. After that, they will read for details and answer some questions. In the end, they will practice speaking for fluency in the same context, but expanding to more personal level: talking about the huge house owned by influential family in Turkey.

Procedure

Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T "Do you like your house?" brief discussion. T "Now, let's watch a short video about someone's house" "When you are watching, think about these questions: Who lives there? Where is it? Do you like the house?" T show video T show PPW W/C discussion Task 1 (HO1) T "let's find out some info about it" "there are four questions here, read the questions first, then read the text to find the answer. If you can't find the answer in the text, just take a guess. You have one minute to read P/W peer-check answers W/C discussion

Pre-Reading (7-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

W/C discussion T "What do you want to know about the house?" "You can write your questions on the blank part of the HO (HO1) G/W "Where is it?" "How old is it? "Who are these people living there?" "How much it costs to maintain it?" "Is it open to public?" W/B ....... Task2 (HO2) T "Now you will read the article quickly and see if you can find the answers." "Fold the HO (HO2)...read the article, no need to look at the other side." P/W W/C

Pre-teaching vocabulary (2-3 minutes) • To clarify block vocabulary so ss can read the text smoothly

T "There are some words in the text that you may need to know. WB and elicit answers

While-Reading #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging specific information reading tasks

Task 3, re-group T "There are 6 blue cards and 6 pink cards here, the pink card has numbers on it, find a blue card to match it." Find the answer in the text. T hand answer key. W/C

While-Reading #2 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading task

Task 4 (HO3) T "Unfold the HO (HO2) There are 6 Qs here" read the Q and then read the text to find answers. ICQ "How many questions?" p/w W/C

Post-Reading/Listening (15-16 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Task 5 (HO4) T " Are there houses like Chatsworth house in Turkey?"... "The questions are in this HO (HO4)" Discuss your answers and share with the class after." Re-group (1-5) G/W W/C T "How about question 3? Is it fair that so much wealth can be inherited?" "Why?" G/W W/C Wrap up. T "So what do you think Chatsworth house can make money from?" "wedding, hotel, restaurant......" "Would you like to visit one day?"
