Description

In this lesson, students learn about the past simple tense, regular and irregular verb forms through guided discovery based on reading a text about the career of the film director, James Cameron. The lesson starts with a guided discovery of the past simple tense., that covers the MFP. Then the students are taught new vocabulary related to the text through pre-teaching. After, the students have a task of reading for gist to find the irregular verbs and to match them to their base verb forms. Followed by reading for specific information, which will require the students to do a quiz about the text.

Main Aims

  • To provide reading practice using a text about the life and career of film director James Cameron in the context of life events that have happened in the past

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of the past simple tense in the context of life and careers experiences that have taken place in the past.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-To use T's personal life events as a lead-in: 1.What did I talk about?; When did this happen? Ans: The past. 2. Do we know when it happened?; Does the sent. tell you when it all happened? Ans: Yes. 3. Which are the verbs? Ans: Travelled, was, studied, lived. 4. Are these sentences past,present or future? Ans: Past. 5. If it is past and we know when it happened, what is the tense called? Ans: Past Simple. 6. What is the present tense of these verbs?; why aren't they written the same way? Ans: because they are reg. and irreg. verbs 7. What are the differences between these 2 types of verbs? Ans: end with e = ed

Pre-Reading/Listening (5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-To pre-teach new vocabulary (related to the film director's story) using photographs. -Students to match the photos to the list of vocabulary. -Students to work in pairs. -to drill the vocabulary

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

-Students are going to read the context on James Cameroon, and search for the irregular and regular verbs. -to demonstrate, to icq

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

-T to instruct students to do an activity on irregular verbs: to look at the irregular verbs and to match them with the verbs provided. -to demonstrate, to icq -to place answer sheet on two walls. -T to instruct students to do the activity on regular verbs: to look for the verbs that end with 'e' and to look for verbs ending with 'y' -to icq, to demonstrate -to give out answer sheet

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-Students to attempt to answer the questions provided individually. -to demonstrate, to icq -Students to mark their answers. -to check their answer through closed pairs -Students to attempt the fill in the gap activity in pairs -to demonstrate, to icq -Students to check their answer in open pairs.
