Description

In this lesson, students will focus on talking about books or films. The lesson will introduce some useful language students can use as they speak and they will also use the lexis from the previous lesson(s).

Materials

Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency in the context of describing,recommending and evaluating films or books.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss practice in listening for gist and detail. To provide review/clarification and practice of functional phrases to describe books/films, and to provide freer practice in lexical phrases for evaluating and recommending.

Procedure

Warmer/Pre-Listening (9-10 minutes) • To get the Ss interested in the topic.

Put the A4 sized papers with the photos of book covers and TV shows on the board. Get Ss into pairs/small groups to discuss what they are about- Ss discuss with their partners. General FB

Exposure (12-15 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Ask the Ss to listen and take down notes. Ss listen to understand if the people in the listening task like what they read or watched. Ask Ss to check their answers with their partners (pair them up); monitor General FB- w/c Ask the Ss if they would like to read these books or see the TV shows. Ask them to give reasons.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Check to make sure that the Ss know what "based on" means. Write "based on" on the board. Ask them to guess its meaning. Help if needed. Pair up the Ss and ask them to fill in the blanks with the information they remember from the listening. Ask them to listen again to check their answers. General FB- Check the answers.

Productive Task(s) (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ask the Ss to think about something they have read or seen and ask them to evaluate/describe them or to express their preferences. Elicit and write the structures they can use on the board. Give them some preperation time and monitor/help when needed. Put them in groups of 3-4 and ask them to discuss their ideas . Monitor discreetly. General FB
