To give practice in listening for gist and specific information, and speaking for fluency
Procedure (43-57 minutes)
- Greet the class. - Ask Ss if they can remember my favourite city whose symbol I drew in the previous lesson. - Elicit the answer which is Paris. - Tell an anecdote for Activity 1 on p. 11 in the coursebook. - Ask Ss if they have been outside their region or country. If yes, ask for the reason: living/ working/ travelling. - Write "culture" in a bubble on the board. - Ask Ss which topics we can talk about under the title of culture. - Stick the first sample: "food". - Elicit Ss' answers and stick the rest of the topics: "clothing", "greetings", "hospitality", "traffic and transport". - Deal with any unknown word.
- Give the pre-listening handout to Ss - Refer Ss to the questions - Ss work in pairs and talk about their intercultural experiences - Monitor and help where needed - Take W/C FB
- Show Federico's picture and the picture of Egypt - Ask Ss where Federico is from and where they think he is in the picture - Ask Ss why he was in Egypt for a year - Elicit the answers - Give the listening handout - Refer Ss to the questions in part A to read them - Ss listen to recording 1.7 on p. 11 - Ss check their answers with their partner(s) - Elicit the answers W/C
- Refer Ss to the questions in part B in the listening handout to read them - Ss listen to recording 1.7 on p. 11 in the coursebook again - Ss check their answers with their partner(s) - Elicit the answers W/C
- Refer Ss to the questions in part C in the listening handout to read them - Ss listen to recording 1.8 on p. 11 - Ss check their answers with their partner(s) - Elicits the answers W/C
- Say they will examine some sentences from the listening - Give the vocabulary handout - Ss do ex.1 individually - Ss check their answers with their partner(s) - Elicit the answers and do a language analysis if needed
- Refer Ss to ex.2 in the vocabulary handout - Write a sentence on the board about a change relating to you or someone else you know - Ss work individually - Monitor and help where needed - Refer Ss to ex.2.b in the vocabulary handout where Ss work with their partner(s) and compare their sentences - Take some general FB
- Tell Ss that they will talk about their culture where they come from - Give Ss the speaking handout - Check and clarify the meaning of any unknown word - Give Ss a little time to prepare and think about what they will say for ex.1 - Put them into groups for ex. 2 - Monitor and take notes of any errors - Take some general FB and if time allows, do some delayed error correction at the end Optional Procedure: (If there is no time for this activity) - Tell Ss they will do ex.2 at home, will write a paragraph by answering the questions in ex.2, will submit them to me, and will be provided with written feedback
