Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of comparatives and superlatives in the context of cities and people

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about a dialogue about two cities
  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of comparison between people

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will stick two pictures of Dubai and Singapore to the board and ask "what do you know about these cities? What are they like? '' to brainstorm a little bit and elicit some ideas and adjectives.

Exposure (8-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Give HO1 to the students and ask them to read it quickly. I will write the adjectives on the board and tell them that they will need to use them in a different way. After the gist reading, tell them that they will listen to the audio to find out the answers. After playing the recording, I will ask them to peer-check their answers. Elicit from each group one answer and correct if needed.

controlled practice (5-7 minutes) • to elicit the target language's rules

to give the students HO8 in which the students will try to work out the rules of the comparatives and superlatives with their partner or groups. Elicit the answers and give a whole class feedback.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will ask the students how did the adjectives I wrote on the board changed and write the changed form.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will write on the board from the examples we did in the previous task, especially the ones the students told the meaning of. I will use color coding to highlight the target language and elicit the form. I will drill chorally and individually, and use the finger technique. I will ask CCQs to make sure that the students got the form and the meaning correctly.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will give the students the profiles of four different people and ask them to discuss the differences and the similarities of these people with their groups. And then give them HO6 to fill the blanks using the target language. For feedback, I will give them an answer key.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-5 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

I will give the students HO6 in which they will compare the profiles with their pairs producing 2-3 sentences. I will monitor to check if they are using the target language and to spot the errors.

Free Practice (6-6 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will give the students HO7 , and discuss why do they think that someone is happier than the other or who has the most important life, and then I will elicit some ideas to wrap up the lesson.
