Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in Question 1 (7-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T: Set the context of our destination: Imagine we are in the mountain ranges by the black sea. What are they called? I packed my things into a backpack to survive for 3 weeks, but I fell down a mountainside and lost all my food. What problem do I need to overcome? Ss: Response to the question (hopefully) T: Think about being in the mountains by the black sea. What problems would you have to overcome? Do you have any fear? e.g. heat, fear, food. Pair Work. Ss: Pair Work Response This warmer relates directly to the reading but I have changed it, slightly, to relate it more to the Turkish Culture. Perhaps they will be more engaged through the idea of the Black Sea mountain ranges rather than a jungle.

Pre-Teaching Vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the reading and the questions

T: Group them off into 3 groups: Take 2 minutes and look at these words. What you think you know and what you are unsure of. -Words: (Raft) (Spirits) (Desperate) (Optimistic) Ss: Work together for 2 minutes. T: What don't you know? This stage aids the reading portion in the next segment. The pair work will give them speaking time.

Reading and recollection of questions, functional practice (7-9 minutes) • To provide students with an opportunity for controlled practice

T: Delivery of Questions and Readings: Fold the paper in half. T: take two minutes to look at the questions individually. Underline words in each question to help you remember as we read. T: We are going to listen to two recordings. Each recording has questions attached to it. As you listen try to answer the questions. Ss: Controlled Practice T: Take 4 minutes with your partner and discuss your answers Ss: Discussion T: What would you have done if you had been in Yossi's situation? T: Pass out the second set of questions. T: Take 2 minutes and read the first paragraph and then 2 minutes to read the second individually. Ss: Individual Practice T: Now take two minutes and talk about the questions for both. T: Pass out the last sheet of questions. Listen and fill in the blank. What are the answers. T: Do you think you would have survived if you had been in Yossi's situation? Ss: take two minutes to discuss with your partner

Post-Reading/Listening (4-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to have freer practice

T: Reorganize the group Do you know of anyone in your life who has been in a similar situation? T: If you were really stranded in the Mountains of the Black Sea, could you be optimistic? What would you do to keep your spirit up?
