Description

In this lesson, students will learn how to make requests through guided discovery based on listening and speaking.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice language used for making requests and offers using a dinner party at home

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening and speaking practice in the context of a dinner party at home

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T displays a picture on the board using a overhead projector. T asks the students to describe the picture with questions like are they friends or family?, what do they eat?, what do they drink?, is it a special occasion?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a listening exercise

T plays the recording (4.10) and gives the students a simple gist task. T asks the students the students what they are drinking. To elicit the answer T shows a bottle of still water and sparkling water. T asks the students what they are having for dessert to expose the word dessert. T asks the students if they are from the same family or friends to expose the target language and tell the students these are the polite conversations. Teacher writes on the whiteboard " Can I have some water, please?" and "Could I have some water, please?" T read the both sentences in rhythm and asks the students to repeat in order to help them with stress and intonation

Clarification (10-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T gives the students HO 1. The Ss works individually to match the statements. T gives the answer key to the students. T does concept check the sentence "help yourself" if it means "take some dessert" or "give me the dessert" with the students.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T splits the students into pairs and names them A and B. T asks the students who are A to raise their hands and does the same for B. T asks the students who are B to close the HO 1 and tells the A's to ask the questions, B's will answer and they can swap the roles. T monitors.

Controlled Practice 2 (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T gives HO 2 to the students to complete the requests with Can/Could I...? or Can/Could you....? T monitors. T check the answers. T asks the students if they remember who are A's and B's and tell them this time B's will ask the questions and A's will answer. T monitors. T plays the recording T4.11 for students check their answers.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T displays Cem Yilmaz picture on the whiteboard using the overhead projector. T creates a role play for the students and tells the students they are invited by Cem Yilmaz for dinner. T asks 5 volunteers for the play. T monitors them if there is a language to correct
