Description

This lesson will focus on teaching students effective ways of reading any given material in English. Students will learn to pick out the important or specific bits of information from the passage. As part of the lesson students will learn new words and at the end of the lesson use them in sentences

Materials

Main Aims

  • The main aim of this lesson is to teach pupils to read effectively and productively. It is very common that a pupil can read a passage but can still not comprehend much of such a passage, this lesson aims to address that.

Subsidiary Aims

  • The spin off aims of this lesson are learning new vocabulary from the passage to be read as well effective listening when students watch the short video.

Procedure

Short video on friendship (5-5 minutes) • To ease students into the topic centered on friendship

The teacher starts by inquiring from 1 or 2 who their friends were from which he will introduce the lesson as a lesson on reading based on the topic of friendship. At this point the teacher ask the students to listen attentively as they watch a short video on"why we need friends"

Vocabulary (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text to be read

The teacher explains vocabulary from the passage so that when the passage is read students will understand. The teacher will always inquire first from the students what they understand of the vocabulary. The vocabulary will include but not limited to the following: Outdoors, On purpose, Dusk, Thunder, Entire and Face to face

Skimming for information (5-5 minutes) • To help student pick out quickly the information they need from the passage without resorting to reading the whole passage.

The teacher quickly explains skimming before asking students to skim the passage for specific information on the following: Who is the letter from? When was the letter written? Who is it to? When did the writer live?

Reading for detail (8-10 minutes) • To provide pupils with skills on reading for detailed information.

The teacher leads the class into reading for specific details by posing questions whose answers can be revealed by reading the passage. The questions include:Why does Anne love nature so much? Did she always love it so much? What did she do one night? Where does she spend most of her time?

Practice (8-8 minutes) • To provide students a chance to practice what they have learnt.

The teacher asks the students to make sentences using vocabulary explained earlier from the passage, Outdoors, On purpose, Dusk, Thunder, Entire and Face to face
