Description

In this lesson, students learn about using the past continuous with the simple past and the time conjunctions when and while through a guided discovery based on a reading text about getting into acting. The lesson starts with pre-teaching some vocabulary. It is followed by reading for gist and highlighting the target language. Finally, there is a controlled practice through blank filling and freer practice via a personalized speaking activity.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- give the ss a HO to match some new vocabulary with their explanation, individually - FB by peer check - final FB by checking as a WC - clarify the vocabulary they do not know by asking some of the students to explain or finally the T does if no one knows - ask them to predict what the reading is about according to the vocabulary as a WC

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

- hand out the reading text HO and ask them to keep it folded - ask ss to read the text very fast just find if their prediction was right, set 2 minutes - WC feedback by asking who got the right predictions and if no one does, the right answer - tell ss to unfold the HO, read it again individually and answer the detailed questions below in pairs - Provide the answers in a HO for FB

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

- give the ss the guided discovery/ grammar analysis HO to work on individually and set 3 minutes - give the ss the answer key for a final FB

Clarification (1-3 minutes) • To clarify the meaning of the target language

- CCQ the two sentences in the guided discovery;

Controlled Practice (2-4 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- give the ss a gap-fill HO to work on, individually - give them the answer key for FB

Freer Practice (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- ask the ss to write two sentences, one using when and one using while to talk about when they first started their career, set 2 minutes - peer check for FB - ask for a sentence from each student for final FB

Error-correction (1-3 minutes) • To provide language feedback based on the target language

- while the ss write their sentences, walk around to observe if any of their sentences has errors and take notes to correct together at the end as a WC on the WB
