Description

In this lesson, Ss learn how to scan read a text as well as reading it in detail. They also review names of some occupations. Next, they practice speaking in the context of jobs.

Materials

Abc white board and markers

Main Aims

  • To provide scan and detailed reading practice in the context of an article about best and worst jobs

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of adjectives in the context of jobs

Procedure

Lead-In (3-5 minutes) • To generate interest in the topic

I show ss 4 pics and have them tell me what jobs they are. Then, they practice saying the words.

Readin - prediction (3-5 minutes) • To give Ss opportunity to guess the content

I tell ss that we are going to read sth abot Rob's jobs. They should guess which jobs were his best, worst and first job.

Scan reading (10-15 minutes) • To help ss develop the sub-skill of scan reading

I tell ss that we're going to read sth about Rob. "Rob is a journalist. Do you think the money is good? Is it a lot of work? Do you think he likes his job now? I give you each a text. Read it fast and answer these 3 questions. You have 2 minutes." (3 mins) Then I want ss to check their answers with their partners. After 3 minutes, I will put the answers on the screen for ss to check their work. Next, I put ss into 4 different groups, giving each group a set of sentences to put in order. (7 mins) ss can check their work by looking at the board.

Vocabulary (7-10 minutes) • To provide ss with the vocab they need to describe jobs

I get ss to underline all the adjectives in the text, and get a WC feedback. I show them the list of adjectives on the board and get them to match the words which are antonyms. (2 mins) We work on the pronunciations. (5 mins)

Talk about a job (5-6 minutes) • To help ss put what they have learned today into practice

I get ss to talk about Robin's job using the vocab in the previous stage. ss stand up and find another student in class to talk about Rob's jobs.

OPTIONAL (5-10 minutes) • To teach ss some other jobs

I give out the copies of jobs and have ss talk about each one in their groups using the adjectives.
