Main Aims

To provide clarification and practice of Past forms of modal in the context of The Martians are coming!

Subsidiary Aims

To provide scan reading practice using a text about The Martians are coming! in the context of The Martians are coming!

Procedure (30-53 minutes)

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To introduce the lesson and the context

The T will play a short video (The War of the Worlds trailer) and asks the SS "What is the problems that the people in the video are facing?"

Pre-reading (3-5 minutes) • To prepare the SS for the reading stage

The T gives a handout (HO-1) to the SS and asks them: "Look at A-B pictures, what do you think the article is about?" (PW) Then, the T asks the SS about their prediction.

Reading task (5-12 minutes) • To provide students with rspecific information reading task

The T gives the SS a handout (HO-2) and tell the SS: "You will read this text and answer these questions" Feedback type: WCFB by asking the SS what their answers are.

Highlighting the target language (10-15 minutes) • To highlight the target language so the students focus on it

The T gives the SS a handout (HO-3) and tell the SS to work in groups and sets a time limit of 5 minutes and then he gets the feedback by making the SS write their answers on the board. After that the T drill the target language.

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To practice the target language

The T gives the SS a handout (HO-4) and tell the SS to work in groups (regrouping)

Free practice (4-8 minutes) • To practice on what they have learned

The T divides the class into 2 groups (Aliens and Humans) and give each group s sheet of paper for role playing and tells the SS: "Now we have 2 groups one is "aliens" group and the other is "Humans" group. I will give you each a sheet of paper and you have to say the sentence in the paper to the other group and the other group will reply you with the sentence that is written in their sheet of paper. Then, the aliens group will have to come up with a similar sentence to say to the other group."
