To provide gist listening practice using a text about back pain in the context of giving advice to see the doctor
Procedure (35-45 minutes)
To display some pictures of pain in different body parts, and to have Ss elicit their names. To ask Ss predict what the topic of today's lesson will be. - They can keep their predictions in mind now till listening and see whether they are right or wrong.
To write the pre-questions on the board. - To give Ss clear instructions that they are going to listen to a adialogue between Bob and his friend to find the answers to the pre-questions and also to see whether their prediction concerning the topic of the lesson was right or not. Then, Ss will check their answers in pairs. After that the WCFB will be given. The listening text here consists of two situations which will be dealt with separately.
I will write the expressions on the board - I will give Ss the typescripts of the listening to underline those expressions themselves. - I will tell Ss that all these expressions are from the listening text. - I will ask them what they think about the usage of those expressions.
I will give Ss hand-outs including the different expressions. Ss should match the expressions with their meanings. Also, they have to choose the right usage of those expressions. They can work in pairs. Then WCFB will be given. More clarification will be introduced if need be.
To give Ss clear instructions that they are going to complete the dialogues with the newly learnt expressions. They first activity will be a dialogue from their WBs. While, the second activity will be a dialogue from their SBs. Each activity will be dealt with separately. They can check their answers in pairs. Hot error correction will be given during the WCFB besides highlighting the meaning and the usage of each expression.
Ss will be divided into pairs. They will be asked to form conversations of their own. At least one of the newly learnt expressions should be used in those conversations. After finishing, they can demonstrate their conversations in front of the class. They can use given topics or use their own ideas.
