Procedure (33-43 minutes)
Teacher asks students to discuss what is better for a family: to leave mum or dad stay with a baby during the maternity leave. In case they don't remember what maternity leave is, teacher reminds sts that maternity leave is a period when a parent stays with a baby at home to take care and look after. Teacher gives pieces of the sentence to create one. Then asks if these can be applied to the maternity leave and if yes then why, - his life took an unexpected turn. - his life was at a crossroads. - he felt that it was time to move on. - he wanted to take a new direction. To discuss in pairs if they can explain these words to each other and exchange their ideas. If sts don't know something I will explain.
students listen to a track 1.56 about the maternity leave in pairs they discuss the following questions 1. How has his life changed? 2, How has this changed his day-to-day life? Then teacher moves one person around and they check the answers in pairs again.
to give out HO with the questions from ex 2, letting sts to get familiar with them, sts listen to the text one more time. Teacher splits students into pairs and asks them to discuss the questions they have, then they turn to the partner on the left and check their answers. Teacher asks a couple of questions to answer in the class.
Teacher gives HO with the tape script 1,56 and wile listening to the text, asks students to find and underline the following phrases from ex 3 p 68 teacher asks the students to work in groups (in total 5 groups needed) to discuss what the words in italics refer to and summarize their answers. Every group reveals only one idea at random.
Teacher writes down errors noticed on the previous stage and corrects them eliciting the right answers.
Teacher splits students into pairs and thy discuss the topic "Would you be happy as a stay at home parent? Why or why not? Students use the vocabulary they had in the beginning of the lesson. I ask for the common pros and contras.
