Procedure (33-45 minutes)
The teacher shows a picture of a wedding to the students and asks "what's this?" and tries to elicit the word "wedding". Then the teacher tries to elicit the words "bride" and "groom" from the students. Next, the teacher puts 6 questions on the board (exercise 1) and asks the students to answer the questions in pairs.
rent a motorbike: The teacher sets a situation for the students : "I want to stay in Istanbul for ten more days, but in these days I need a motorbike to go around the city. I don't want to buy a motorbike, what can I do?" and tries to elicit the word "rent" from the students. If the students don't know it, the teacher will give the word to them and then checks their understanding by using CCQs. get to our place: The teacher says: My dad arrives home at 9 o'clock. My dad arrives home or ....??? " and tries to elicit "get" from the students.
The teacher puts 2 questions on the board and ask the students to read the text quickly and answer these 2 questions. The teacher says that question 1 is for the first text and question 2 is for the second text. Question 1:Whose wedding is it| (Oliver and Becky's) Question 2: Which buses can Phil get to go to his aunt's house| (Yonge or Spadina|) The students check their answers in pairs and then the teacher gets feedback from the whole class.
The teacher puts four sentences on the board (exercise 2.a) on the board and asks the students to read email 1 and tick the correct sentences. (1.T/2.F(Canada)/3.F (three weeks)/4.T) then, the teacher asks the students to correct the wrong sentences. The students will do it individually and then they check their answers in pairs. The teacher puts the students' focus on the second email and gives a handout to the students that has 4 questions on it. They have to answer the questions individually and then, check their answers in pairs. Then, the teacher asks some of the students to come to the board and write the answers for each question.
The teacher says that her sister and her friend are coming to Istanbul and this is their first time in the city. They have booked a hotel and they have some questions. The teacher puts the questions on the board and the students have to discuss the questions in their groups. The teacher gets feedback from the whole class.
The teacher writes "listen to" and "watch" on the board and elicits different words and phrases that often go with these verbs, for example, "listen to the radio/the news/music" and "watch TV/sports/film, etc" The teacher tells students that words that often go together are called collocations. The teacher checks students' understanding of the examples that they already have in the exercise 4.a. and then asks the students to work individually and read the emails again, then fill in the tables with two or more collocations for each verb. Students check their answers in pairs and then, they come to the board and complete the table over there. Then the teacher drills the collocations with the whole class.
The teacher gives a handout to the students (exercise 6.a) and asks the students to fill the gaps with the correct form of the verbs "book-rent-get or stay" . The students work individually and then, check their answers in pairs. The teacher gets feedback from the whole class.
The teacher asks the students to ask the questions in the previous exercise from each other in pairs. Then the teacher asks the students to talk about their partner for feedback.
