Description

In this lesson, students review the Present Continuous for "now" and compare it with Present Simple Tense in the context of text about a strike. By the end of the lesson, learners will have a better understanding of Present Simple and Present Continous and will have had practice using that language and be better able to talk about the strike.

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of what people usually do in their free time

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher divides the class into two groups by giving them two different stickers (red and green). The teacher shows with a gesture that green team goes on the left and red team goes to the right. The teacher gives A4 size papers to each group. There are words from the sentence (I usually go to work by train, but I'm driving today) in the papers. Students need to put the word in correct order and put them on the WB. "Put the words in correct order." The green team has the word "I usually go to work by train," The red team has the word "but I'm driving today" The whole class can see the sentence.

Highlighting target language (5-6 minutes) • To highlight the target language so that learners are focused on it

The teacher shows the handout. The handout has the adopted task from the student's book. Task 1 (HO) Look at this sentences. Complete the rules with Present Simple (PS) or Present Continuous (PC). The teacher gives 2 minutes to finish the tasks and asks students to check with their peers. Then the teacher volunteers students to write the correct answer on the WB.

Clarification (5-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher CCQ's the meaning. Do I usually go to work? (Yes) Is it everyday action? (Yes) Do I drive to work every day (No) When am I driving? (Now) The teacher shows the word today, now and at the moment. The teacher asks students where we can put these words? Where we put these words? In the PC column. Then the teacher draws cline and asks where to put in the sentence. The teacher highlights the pronunciation. The teacher pronounce the sentence and asks if it is a question or statement? Is it a question? (No) Do we raise the intonation? (No) The teacher pronounces the sentence with fall intonation and drills it. Then the teacher shows the weakened forms and underlines them. Then drills the pronunciation again.

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The teacher shows the task 2 (HO). "Put the verbs in the Present Simple or Present Continuos." ICQ: Do we work in pairs? (No) Do we put only the Present Simple? (No) The Ss work in the task. The teacher monitors the students to see if everyone is understood the task. Then the teacher asks students to check the answer with a partner. The teacher volunteers students to write the correct answer on the WB.

Semi-Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

The teacher presents the Task 3 (HO). "Make questions about the people. Work individually" The teacher monitors the students to see if all of them are doing the task. Then the teacher asks to check with the peers. Then the students work in pairs and asks answers the questions. "Work in pairs. Ask and answer the questions." The teacher demonstrates the one example with an active student. The teacher monitors the students. Corrects if some students mispronouncing the sentences.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The teacher writes the names on the WB: Ghaini, Duman, Sungat. The teacher shows the pictures and asks who are they. The teacher shows the task on PPT. Then teacher demonstrates one example. - Who is Duman? - He is my friend. - What is he doing now, do you think? - I think he is working at his office. - What does he do in his free time? - He watches movies in his free time. Then the teacher asks each pair practice the task. The teacher monitors the students to see if they are using the target language correctly. After 4 minutes the teacher will correct answers. Then asks 2-3 students to demonstrate their dialogue
