Procedure (40-50 minutes)
Teacher to introduce the topic of planning and booking a holiday by showing a powerpoint slide with the Headline Travel Ideas- What do you like? Where do you want to go? The powerpoint slide contains 10 images. Teacher points to whitewater rafting picture and asks what is this? Teacher elicit's rafting, whitewater rafting. Teacher then asks what type of holiday is this? Teacher to elicit adventure holiday. Teacher then asks where can I do this? Students respond with possible places. Teacher asks students to work in pairs and discuss other images. Teacher to then give this handout to students and asks them to discuss. Students discuss and teacher monitors pair work and responses. Teacher ask class what type of holidays are these? Teacher to elicit, adventure, romantic, sightseeing, history and culture, beach and sun.
Teacher asks where can you book these holidays? to ellicite travel agency and internet. Teacher divides students into groups of three or four. Teacher gives the handout to students and asks them to read the information and discuss in their groups. Students discuss task together. Anticipated problems with information are made-to-measure and golden anniversary vocab. Teacher asks students to ask other students in their group for the answers. Teacher then asks class do we understand the information? Students say yes. Teacher to ask how many people are in this family group? students repsond with different answers. 10, 12, 20 etc.
Teacher says there are 3 different groups in this family. Group A, B and C. Group A is a family with children Group B is a couple Group C are the grandparents. They all have special needs and interests. Teacher to divide students into groups of 3 and ask them to work together and decide on the destination, accommodation, possible activities and excursions and the facilities for the golden wedding party. Teacher tells students they will make a presentation to the rest of the class about the holiday. Teacher to handout out task and information to each student group.
Teacher to tell students they may find it useful to use phrases from the useful language box as per Useful language H/O. Teacher to model this with the useful handout. Teacher says the he is in fact going to plan a 50th wedding anniversary for his parents with his older brother. We've decided to go to the Cappadocia because we have never been there before and we all like natural wonders and history. We're going to arrange some accommodation in Goreme as its n the heart of the Cappadocia region. My parents probably won't be interest in taking a hot air balloon ride over Cappadocca. My brother would like to eat authentic manti so we're going to go to Kayseri just to eat manti.
Students to decide on a spokesperson for their group and tell the class about their holiday trying to use phrases from the useful language H/O. Other students to take notes about the other presentations to decide on which holiday was the best.
