Procedure (43-57 minutes)
Students think of the last vacation they went on. Write down two sentences about what you did on that vacation. Share your sentences with a neighbor.
Introduction to story. First draw a timeline on the board and ask students to decide when my story is taking place. Tell the story. Check tense with students. Have students in pairs briefly recall what they remembered from the story before moving to highlighting
Show the sentence on HO1 we will begin focusing on Pass out HO1 to students. Write the first sentence on the board. Ask concept questions to check meaning. -Am I here now? Yes -Was I here last month? No Elicit from students what the focus word is: 'What word tells us that this is past tense?'
Begin with sentence 'I traveled here'. 'Traveled' should be underlined from highlighting section. Demonstrate the form of past simple underneath this sentence Instruct students to copy the notes onto HO1 Do drilling. Sentence stress falls on verb. Compare with sentence 'We wanted to travel in Turkey', specifically the pronunciation of the -ed in 'traveled' and 'wanted'. Drill this sentence Change 'We wanted to travel in Turkey' to 'Did you travel in Turkey?' Use concept questions to check understanding. Clarify the difference between 'in' and 'to'. Highlight the form of the sentence and drill. Demonstrate word connection in 'did you'. Sentence stress on 'Did' and 'travel'. Highlight that the main verb, 'travel', does not end in -ed. The word 'did' makes it past tense. Model this to show it is wrong. Practice simple responses with students: 'Yes, I did' or 'No, I didn't'. Do the same with 'We didn't have enough time.'
Show HO2 and pass it out Students work in groups to complete For feedback, I will reread my story and students will check their answers. If time permits (or if students are done with HO2 early), give out HO3. Students can work with a partner to complete it.
Explain that students will practice making their own questions. Refer to the past simple question form we studied. Give out HO4. Have students work together. Monitor closely to make sure students understand the vocabulary and are forming questions correctly.
Remind students how we answer questions in the past tense: 'Yes, I did' or 'No, I didn't'. Students find a partner from a different table and ask each other the questions they formed.
