Main Aims

  • To develoop the students' reading skills by practising reading for gist, specific information, and detail.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice new vocabulary that enables the students understand the text.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'll ask the students about their ages and try to lead them into conext about man' s dream of immortality. I'll hang a picture on the board to lead them into context of man's attempt to be immortalised.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I'll hand the students a handout to match the words with their meanings in pairs. Sudents check their answers in pairs. After that, I'll give them model answers for feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I'll hand the students a handout to check their ideas about what is possible to happen either now in the future. Then I'll ask the students to read the text ( Ps 117 ) quickly to decide what they think . I'll tell them not to care about the gaps in the text. They work in groups. After that, each group check answers with the other.Next, Ill hand them a handout as answer keys for the whole class feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I'll hand the students a handout to find words or phrases in the text that mean much the same as the words in the handout. Now the students should read the text in detail to find the answers. They read indivdually. Then they check their answers in pairs. After that, students write the answers on the board for the whole class feedback.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

All the students stand up and gather in pairs to discuss man's attempt to immortalise himself. After each pair exchanges their points of views, each one finds another peer for finding out new ones.
