Adverbs of frequency

Description

In this lesson students learn about Adverbs of frequency through a guided discovery based on a reading text about hobbies and interest. The lesson starts with showing a picture of different hobbies .This followed by a text where the target language is presented and Students will be exposed to different exercises and activities that focus on the TL.Finally Students will have a free practice to use the learnt items productively.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice using adverbs of frequency in the context of hobbies and interests

Procedure

Lead-in (2-5 minutes) • to generate interest and create a context for the topic

The teacher projects some pictures of different hobbies and interests. The teacher asks students if they do any of these activities and how often. Ss will have few minutes to discuss the pictures in pairs and after that with the hole class. This will activate Ss their existing knowledge and give them an idea about what the lesson is going to be about. It prepares them for the reading task .

Reading task (6-10 minutes) • to contextualize and introduce the target language

In this stage the teacher will give students a text to read . They have to rad it for the first time quickly and find the right title for the text . Ss have to read the text for the second time and then the the questions for specific information . Tha teacher will make the instructions clear enough and asks ICQs to make sure that Ss know what they have to do . This text will provide the Ss with some ideas about the lesson and they will get some words that they will use in the next tasks .

Highlighting the target Language (5-8 minutes) • so expose Ss to the target language and make them aware of what they need to know and focus on it

Teach will give Ho to SS and they will have to work in pairs to to fill the gaps with the right adverbs of frequency . - students check their answers in groups .and when they finish the teacher will invite some students to come to the WB and write the answers as a feedback . In this stage Ss will have the chance to focus in the target language and implement what they learnt from the reading text .

Clarification (13-15 minutes) • To clarify the form,meaning and pronunciation of the TL

The teacher will work in groups write the form of some sentences and students have to provide examples for each form. After that the teacher will ask some CCQs to make sure that Ss understood the form clearly .Following that Ss will fill a chart with the appropriate adverbs of frequency according to their degree of frequency from the less frequent to the most. After that the teacher asks some ICQs to check Ss understanding..Finally Ss have to put the stress on some words ( target language). This method will make all the activities Ss centered and it will minimize TTT and enhance students' autonomy.

Controlled practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice.

Ss are divided into 3 or 4 groups . The teacher will ask them to match some sentences with other ones with the same meaning . when they finish they will discuss their answers with other group and a representative from each group will write the answers on the WB. To check Ss understanding of the form they will have to work with the same group to unscramble some words to make a correct sentence . This controlled practice will test Ss understanding of the lesson and will give the teacher a chance to reflect upon his/her way of teaching .

Free practice/ speaking (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss will have to take a survey with them and go around the classroom to find someone who does an activity and how often .Ss have to ask as more as possible other Ss in order to come up with different names with different hobbies and interests. When they finish each one will talk about the people he/she interviewed and what is the result. This free practice will improve students oral fluency and give them chance to use the language to fulfill a task therefore it will prepare them to use the TL confidently outside the classroom .
