Description

In this lesson the students will have more controlled and freer practice in making conversation using the past simple tense and talking about their last weekend. Some vocabulary of the activities are being revised as well.

Main Aims

  • To practice past simple in terms of making conversation about their last weekend using both regular and irregular verbs and question and negative forms.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To make a conversation the past simple constructions - positive- negative -questions using writing skills

Procedure

Warmer (2-5 minutes) • To remind the students how to form past simple, regular and irregular verbs

I demonstrate a slide with the chart of past simple where the students have to fill in the missing words. I ask 3 students to do that. I remind we have the short answers Yes, I did/ No, I didn't to use during the lesson. We drill the sentences given,

Grammar revision (3-7 minutes) • To remind the past simple tense in terms of affirmative, negative and question sentences (if needed), and usage of regular/irregular verbs

To revise the grammar of the present lesson I offer the students ex 1 to fill in the gaps with the correct form of the words given. This exercise consolidates positive and negative Past Simple forms. They check the answers in pairs and after with the whole class. After I share HO with the questionnaire LAST WEEKEND with the names of the activities

Speaking activity #1 (10-12 minutes) • To allow students to produce the TL through speaking and using Past Simple in questions, negatives and affirmatives

I share HO with the questionnaire LAST WEEKEND with the names of the activities given. To identify them I have colorful pictures on the slides. The students match the pictures to the list of activities and tick if they did them or not. To demonstrate the task I offer them to ask the questions about me and put a tick in the teacher column, showing them a speaking pattern. The students have to use a questionnaire to ask and answer the questions about each other.

Speaking practice #2 (10-15 minutes) • To activate a freer speaking practice and to develop writing skills

I am going to work with ex 6 on this stage. The students are going to ask the following questions in this activity. As a class we make a first sentence as an example and after I offer them to make these in pairs. I underline that we can use useful expressions to show our interest. Ohh, really? Great, oh, oh, good demonstrating a slide and working on pronunciation, They work in pairs and fill in the gaps. After we listen to the track to check if they were correct. After the students mingle and find a best situation and continue it as per the example on the board. I monitor the students and make error correction after the activity.

Post speaking activity (3-5 minutes) • To consolidate the speaking experience and drill

I offer error correction to the students to work with the whole class. And drill the correct version of the sentences and those where my correction and drilling is needed.
