Description

This lesson continues with a similar context from the previous but the focus is on grammar. These students probably know the different future forms seperately, though may not have seen considered them together to contrast the differences. By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to use the grammar to solve problems in short role plays.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of will + infinitive, present progressive and be going to + infinitive in the context of Making plans

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice in listening for specific information and detail
  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about making daily plans

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Remind students of the phone calls in the previous lesson and elicit what happened to establish context. Work in pairs.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher hands out the materials and elicits students to match the correct form, meaning and the sentences together. Students work in 3. Teacher gets some general feedback.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Teacher drills the contradiction and the weak form in 'I'm going to' in the example sentences. Teacher elicits negative and question forms and puts them on board.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Teacher directs students to do exercise 2,a. Then everybody compares their ideas to their peers and then listens to check their answers.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Teacher writes 3 situations on the board and sets each group with one. Then teacher explains them what they should express, motivating them to use the target language.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Teacher guides students to work in groups and do the roleplay as shown. Teacher monitors them and helps the students when needed.
