Show the pictures to the class and elicit the sentences, "She went shopping and then she made dinner". Explain that past simple is used for completed actions in past. Show next pictures and elicit "While she was eating, her plate fell down". Ask students when the action took place and which is a longer action or which one is shorter.
Elicit the forms through questions from students, Ask students what form of verb is used in the sentences, if there is any auxiliary verb is used in the sentence and how would the form change in negative and interrogative sentence.
Ask students different questions to clarify the form and usage of past simple and past continuous. Elicit the timeline of both tenses and use CCQs to check their concepts. Do some drilling of the structure with the students. Also discuss with students that some verbs have irregular past form.
Elicit one more sentence from students where they have to use both tenses. Ask students to work on exercise 1 for controlled practice individually. Use ICQs to ensure they they understand the institutions. Once they have completed the exercise ask them to check in pairs before showing the answers.
Explain Exercise 2 and ask students to complete the exercise in pairs. Use ICQs to check if they understand the instructions. Once completed, ask Ss to check answers in groups. Take w.c FB.
Tell students to work in pairs and make a story by answering the questions in exercise. Once the story is made, they should tell the story to another pair of students. Go around and monitor while they are sharing the story. Ask some pairs to share their story with w/c.
