Description

In this lesson, Students are provided the practice of gist,specific information and detailed listening using a video or track of a conversation about a birthday celebration and it is supported by pre-teaching vocabulary practice including months and dates using pronunciation drills,listening and speaking semi-controlled and free practice containing the target language.The lesson starts with the teacher's own short story about birthdays and questions for the students like ''Do you like birthdays?''.It continues with pronunciation activities including modelling,highlighting and drilling about months and dates .After that,the lesson continues with semi-controlled practice activities including months and dates using speaking as productive skill.Then,the students practice gist,specific information and detailed listening through a video or track of a conversation about a birthday celebration .Later,the students are supported by a free speaking activity in a group work like listing own ''to do list'' for own birthday party and comparing them with his/her friends in the group Finally the lesson ends with feedback and error correction including form,meaning and pronunciation of months and dates in a sentence.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

*T tells a short story about her birthday,birthday presents,birthday party...etc. *Ss answer the questions asked by the teacher such as ''Do you like birthday parties?'' ''What kind of activities do you do on your birthday?'' ''Do you like presents for birthday celebrations? ''What kind of presents do you like?...etc.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

*Ss listen and practice the months in Exercise 1 a Page 66 SBook.(CD 3 Track 17) *Ss work in pairs.One of them says a month.His/Her partner says the next two months in Exercise 1 b Page 66 SBook.e.g.: Student A: March Student B: April,May *Ss listen and practice the dates in Exercise 2 a Page 66 SBook. (CD 3 Track 18)e.g.: 1st:First ,2nd:Second...etc. *Ss notice the letters at the end of the pronunciation of dates. e.g.: First,Second,Third,Fourth,Eleventh,Twenty-first,Thirtieth...etc. *Ss work in pairs.They say the dates in Exercise 2 b Page 66 SBook.e.g.: 13th,22nd,23rd,27th,31th...etc. *Ss listen and check their pronunciation for the dates in Exercise 2 b Page 66 SBook. (CD 3 Track 19) *Ss listen again and practice the dates in Exercise 2 c Page 66 SBook. (CD 3 Track 19) *Ss read the questions and answers in pairs like a dialogue.They notice the words written in bold in Exercise 3 Real world Page 66 SBook.e.g.: Student A: What is the date today? Student B: (It's March the seventh. *T gives some tips:'' We say March the seventh or the seventh of March. While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

*Ss work individually in Exercise 7 b Page 66 SBook. (Video/CD 3 Track 22) *Ss look at the photo of Danny and Caren. *Ss listen to their conversation. *Ss answer the question '' What do they decide to do this evening?''

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

*Ss work in pairs in Exercise 7c Page 66 SBook. *Ss choose the correct words or phrases in Exercise 7c Page 66 SBook. (They see howmuch they remember about Danny and Karen in the conversation in Exercise 7 b Page 66 Sbook.) *Ss watch/listen again and they check their answers.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

*Ss work in groups of 3/4. *Each student in the group prepares her / his own ''to do list'' for her / his birthday party.e.g.: -Invite: Ayşe ,Fatma,Hayriye...etc. -Buy: A Birthday Cake -Music: Songs to listen at the party ...etc. *Ss ask each member of the group the question '' What are your plans for your birthday party?'' *Each student in the group answers that question using her / his ''to do list'' *Feedback/Error Correction: Possible Problem 1: Student A: When's your birthday, Ahmet? Student B : It's in May 10th. Solution 1:The preposition ''On'' is used before the time expression of day. The preposition ''In'' is used before the time expression of month. Possible Problem 2: Student A: What is the date today? Student B : It's August 9th. Solution 2: The article '' the'' is used to indicate the day in the date.
