Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about appearance in the context of judging people

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of appearance related vocabulary in the context of judging people

Procedure

Lead-in (6-8 minutes) • To set the lesson context and engage students

. ask the ss to think for a minute 'from the video, what do you think the reading will be about?' . watch a video of a woman who's appearance didn't prevent her success . ask them to brainstorm some ideas in pairs . WCFB by asking one from each pair to share a prediction

Pre-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

. pre-teach vocabulary taken from the text (stereotype, category, judge, persist, accurate, expect, enthusiasm, social, underdog, vital) by playing taboo . set the ss in pairs to explain to each other . write each word on its own on the WB and give half a min to explain each word (5 words for each s) . WCFB by asking which words they don't know and give the stronger ss a chance to explain and finally I provide explanation if they don't manage to

While-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging gist reading task

. provide a summary question HO and instruct them to read it alone before they unfold the text . unfold the HO and instruct that they have 2 min to read it quickly and answer the question, individually . FB, in pairs, ask them to talk about what they chose and why . write the answer on the WB and, as a WCFB, ask why is it the right answer

While-Reading/Listening #2 (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging detailed and inference reading tasks

. provide a true or false HO and tell them to read it . instruct them to read the text again slowly, individually, to find the answers and provide why a sentence is false . peer check for FB . final WCFB by writing the answers on the WB and ask for the correction of the false ones

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to react to the text and personalize it

. set up a discussion activity by giving each s a different question segment . instruct them to exchange the question and change the partner when I they hear the peep . give 2 min for each of the 5 questions . provide error correction for the pronunciation and meaning of the new vocabulary
