Description

In this lesson, students will learn and practice vocabulary (verb patterns) in the context of holidays.The lesson will start with a lead-in activity to set the context and get students engaged, then a test -teach- test format is used to introduce the the TL. The lesson ends with a free practice writing and speaking activities to practice the TL in a personalized way.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of vocabulary (verb patterns, e.g. hope to, intend to, interested in, looking forward to, plan to, want to, would like to) in the context of holidays

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will develop fluency as a speaking sub-skill using the TL.

Procedure

Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

. Show students pictures of holidays. . Elicit the word ' holiday(s)'. . Elicit the places they go and things they do on holidays.

Test #1 (10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

. Give students a short test on some verb patterns. . Ss work individually and then check each other's answers. . Monitor to know which verb patterns needed to be clarified. . Give feedback.

Teach (10 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

. Elicit the target language that students have difficulty with. . Write them on the WB to clarify the meaning using CCQs. . Elicit the verb pattern collocations from the students. . Highlight the form and highlight that 'would like to' is different.

Test #2 (5 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

. Administer another test to the students. . Ss work individually and then practice pair correction. . Give feedback.

Free practice (15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

. use the lead-in photos again to set a context for the students next activities. . Tell students that two people from another country will come to visit turkey. . Tell the students to work in pairs and form a one-week programme to introduce the two guests to their own country. . In pairs, students use a mind map to form this programme and discuss it with each other using the target language, e.g. I/we hope to....., we/I intend to, I am interested in,...etc. . When they finish, get them into groups to discuss their programmes. . Monitor to studnets fluency and for delayed error correction. . Have an open-class discussion. . Give feedback on content and language.
