Description

In this lesson ss are going to improve their reading skills. The lesson is going to start with a questionnaire about men and women. Then they will be given a text based on the results of the questionnaire that they have done. First they will be asked to skim the text and write the titles in the correct paragraph. Then they will read the text in a more detailed way and fill in the gaps in the text with "men" or "women". Finally they will be given some questions that include somespecific information and they will scan the text and choose the correct option in these questions. As a follow-up activity students will be given a speaking task about men and women.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about a survey in the context of men and women

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of men and women

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Draw the female and male signs on the board and ask them what they represent and ask ss what they think they are going to read about.

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Give ss the HO ask them to do the questionnaire. Then put the ss into pairs and tell them to compare their answers.

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading tasks

Give the ss HO. Tell them to read the paragraphs and choose the best title that describes each paragraph. Then put the ss into pairs and tell them to compare their answers. Write the answers on the board, tell the ss to check their answers. Ask them to discuss what made them choose each title in pairs.

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading tasks

Tell the ss to read the text again and fill in the numbered blanks with "men" or "women". Put the ss into pairs and tell them to compare their answers and explain their partners why they have chosen those answers. Write the correct answers on the board. Tell the ss to discuss the answers with their partners.

While-Reading #3 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with scanning reading task about men and women

Give the HO to the students. Tell them to scan the text again and circle the correct option in each question. Put the ss into pairs and tell them to compare their answers. Write the correct answers on the board and ask the ss to discuss the answers with their partners.

Post-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Put the ss into pairs. Give them the HO. Tell them to ask the questions and answer them. Take notes while they are talking and give FB after the activity.

Filler Activity (5-7 minutes) • To provide fluency in speaking in the context of men and women

Give ss the HO. Put them into pairs and tell them to fill in the chart using the sentences in the HO. Tell them to discuss why they have chosen those sentences with other pairs
