Main Aims

To provide practice on using there is/there are with a,an,some, and a lot of in the context of speaking about different towns and cities
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide accuracy in conversing about different landmarks and famous places
Procedure (29-45 minutes)
-Asking Ss to think about the places they you would see in the video -Playing a 2-miute video about famous places in London https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtWeqZsuzpE -Asking them to discuss in pairs the places they saw using there is/there are (showing this on the projector) for 1 minute -Nominating one of each pair to say sth about the video
-Dividing the class into 2 teams: Ladies and gentlemen (depending on who is present) -Giving each team 8 colored cards on which there are 8 different names of places -Asking them to read the words in their teams, 30 seconds -Giving them an A3 map of Rushley Town. -Nominating a leader of each team (the one who runs to match the word with the place on the map); giving instructions; e.g. only the leader can run to the board and post one card at a time. -Projecting the picture -Showing the right answers on the board
-Eliciting examples of the usage of there is/there are using the projected map on the board -Highlighting the difference between there is and there are, though using substitution drilling, e.g. There is a park There are ........parks There is a restaurant There are ........restaurants
-Answering fill-in-the-gaps Ex 2 on page 28 to read and answer individually for 2 minutes. -Peer-checking for 1 minute -Testing each other by omitting the phrase in the blank, e.g ..........two very nice parks. Practicing for 2 minutes. -T monitors to check any common errors -Early finishers write 3 sentences about famous places in Istanbul.
-Distributing different pictures titled as Student A and Student B. -Pairing A with B -Ss hide their pictures and speak about it in pairs to find the difference -T monitors without any immediate correction for them to speak more but highlights this later -T encourages them to use BUT as they have learnt it before to show the differences. -The As go back to their team and list the differences, the Bs do the same -The teacher asks the other team to approve the answers; if wrong, correct them
