Main Aims

  • To give students practice in listening both for gist and specific information with the context of shopping.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce some new vocabularies related to the topic, e.g. different shops and different parts of a shopping mall

Procedure

Lead-in ( vocabularies) (10-12 minutes) • To set lesson context and introduce and teach some new vocabularies related to the topic.

Put the pictures of the shopping malls on the board. Ask them about the pictures. Elicit many answers from them E.g What do you do in a shopping mall? What do you see in a big mall? etc. Then tell them that you need some stuff in the shopping mall and show them the pictures. Ask them where they can buy them. Put the pictures on the board and write the name of the shops. Then ask them about more different things in a mall besides the shops. Ask them to work in pairs and make a list. Then ask them to read what they have written and write the suitable ones on the board. Then drill the words which are on the board.

Vocabulary Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with practice on new vocabularies.

Show them the vocabulary sheet which contains a mall plan.Tell them that they should read the words and match them to the correct letters in the picture. Do number one as an example to be sure they know what they are supposed to do. Ask them to work in pairs. Give them time then ask some individuals to read the answers.

Pre Listening (warm up) (6-8 minutes) • To set listening context and engage students

Put the printed picture on the board. Ask them what they understand from the picture? Elicit many answers. Write the word shopping on the board. Then ask if they like shopping.(mention the word "hate" while the activity). Ask some related questions to elicit more answers. e.g Where do you usually go shopping? Who do you go shopping with? What do you like to buy? How often do you go shopping? What do you think about shopping (easy, hard, enjoyable)?

While Listening (14-16 minutes) • To make students able to get the main idea of a listening text and provide them with more challenging, detailed questions as well

After eliciting enough answers, tell them that they will listen to a text between two people (Andrew and Dorian). Write the names on the board. Show them the listening sheet. Ask them to listen to the text and answer part 1. pass the papers. Play the recording. When they listened ask for the answer. Then tell them that they are going to listen again and answer questions in part 2. Before playing the recording ask them to read the questions. When they listened ask them to check their answers in pairs then the teacher check their answers. When you check you can play the recorder one more time so they can check their understanding. (if necessary)

Post-listening (speaking practice) (7-9 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to practice speaking. To communicate and expand what they've learned.

Tell them that they are going to speak together. So ask them to sit in groups. Then show them the speaking practice sheet. Ask them to read the questions and talk together to discuss the answers. Pass the papers. Give them time, monitor them, then ask some individuals to share their ideas or tell about their friend's ideas.
