Narrating stories, Past perfect continuous

Description

In this lesson, Ss will get introduced to the past perfect continuous tense in the context of telling stories. through a guided discovery, Ss' attention will be drawn to the TL, then with a reading task, the marker sentences will be mentioned by the Ss then clarified by themselves by answering the CCQs. T will help with the PRON and the form. At the end, Ss will tell stories with the TL using cards.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Past perfect continuous in the context of telling stories

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about stories in the past in the context of telling stories

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T will start the lesson by show a picture to Ss. -Ss in pairs are to come up with one sentence for each according to the timeline drawn under them. -Each pair will give one sentence for one picture. -Ss won't be able to generate correct sentence about one of the pictures (past perfect continuous). -T will ask Ss to forget about it for the time being, (after the clarification stage, T will elicit the sentence from Ss)

Highlighting Task (5-8 minutes) • To draw Ss attention indirectly to the TL

-T will present a picture on the projector. -The pic will have two question that will lead Ss to the marker sentences in the text. -By scanning the text, Ss will work alone in order to answer the question and refer back to the text. -T will write the sentences on the W/b. -T will ask students (in groups) to share ideas about the two sentences.

Clarification (15-20 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

-T will present the analysis HO to the Ss pointing to the two sentences in question (1) -T will ask the Ss to answer question (1) alone. ICQs: are you working alone? Are you writing sentences or words in the gaps? - FB will be elicited from the Ss. -(in pairs) Ss will try to put sentence (b) on a timeline to check if there are meaning problems. -FB will be giving to Ss by the T. -T will drill (back chaining) the marker sentences, showing every week form, linking, and stress. - T will elicit the form of the past perfect continuous from the Ss in exercise (3) - Ss will be divided into two groups to do question (4) by a representative from each group. -The task is to highlight all example of the TL in a reading passage.

Language Practice (8-12 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

- Ss will be regrouped (a dominant student in each group) - Ss will practice the TL through a speaking ex. - Ss will be told to tell a story about the card they will draw from the T. -Ss will have time to generate ideas (2mins). ICQs *Are you working in pairs? *Are you going to talk about the past? -Ss will be regrouped again to listen and tell stories for another partner. -Ss will swap partners three times to have better chance practicing the TL.
