Reading&Speaking Lesson:A magazine article ''IF YOU ASK ME...'' on the topic of marriage's being a thing of the past or not

In this lesson,students are reading for gist, scan, detailed, deduction and inference on the topic of marriage's being a thing of past or not in the context of a magazine article on the same issue and They are practicing speaking fluently and accurately about the changes in marriage,and the age,advantages and disadvantages of getting married in speaking type of discussion through several questions in the same context.Firstly,the lesson context is set by eliciting the word '' Marriage'' from the students.Secondly the sentence '' Marriage is a thing of past.'' is elicited from Ss and written on the WB.Thirdly,the Ss express if they agree with the sentence or not and explain why or why not.Then the words words''Marriage'' '' Divorce'' '' (To)Increase'' are elicited from the students , written on the WB and they are clarified through MFP.Later,the Ss are got to read magazine article and find out if the writer agrees that marriage is a thing of the past,individually.They check their answers in pairs,a few of them are wanted to answer orally after it.FB is given by the teacher on WB.the students are demanded to read the article again and put the sentences a-d in the gaps 1-4 individually.Then Ss write the possible answers on WB, and then,the teacher checks the answers on the WB as True or False using (T) for True (F) for False.The wrong answers are clarified and explained by the teacher through eliciting from the Ss.after that,the students are wanted to Discuss three questions in pairs after they are given the hand-outs containing the questions ''1-)Is marriage changing in your country? How? 2-) At what age do people usually get married? 3-) What are the advantages and disadvantages of getting married?''.The teacher sticks these questions on the WB,door and the wall of the class and gets Ss stand up after the pair work.Then,the Ss mingle and share their own answers for the questions with their friends in front of the questions like in an art gallery.After that, three different Ss are asked and one answer for each question is taken from those Ss instead of WC checking.Finally ,the techer gives FB on the content and language accuracy just about a few words phrase or sentences you heard briefly.

Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice speaking fluently and accurately about the changes in marriage,and the age,advantages and disadvantages of getting married in speaking type of discussion through several questions in the same context.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Set the lesson context by eliciting the word '' Marriage''.Elicit the sentence '' Marriage is a thing of past.'' by asking questions like ''What is habit? Is the phrase ''old habit'' about past or present ? Does the expresssion of the marriage's being an old habit mean it is related to past or not? So can we say that marriage is a thing of.............?''Get the students tell the missing part in the sentence.Write the sentence '' Marriage is a thing of past.'' in the centre of WB.Get the Ss work in pairs.Ask the question ''Do you agree?'' and say ''Explain why or why not.'' Change the pairs and get the Ss share their opinions with their new partners.Take just two Ss opinions loudly instead of WC check.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Elicit three words''Marriage'' '' Divorce'' '' (To)Increase'' from the Ss by brainstorming with the help of questions like ''If the relationship between two people is being husband and wife,what do we call it?If husband and wife relationship finishes (Complete the sentence, please.)It means (opposite of marriage?).............(Use body language and gestures too at that moment.)Demostrate the word ''(To) Increase''using body language and gestures then elicit the word.Write these three words on the WB.Apply MFP (Meaning,Form,Pronounciation) on these words on WB and clarify them.Use Language Analyses- Vocabulary to get help.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Give your instruction to the Ss in short and clear way using''Imparative+please.'':Read the magazine article and find out if the writer agrees that marriage is a thing of the past,please.''Do it individually,please.''''Do we work individually or in pairs?(Yes,individually).Give 1 minute for this activity.Then,give them Hand-out 1 (Material 1) containing the text of the magazine article '' IF YOU ASK ME...'' After that,set them in pairs or groups.Get them share their answers in pairs or groups.Take three answers of the Ss orally or loudly instead of WC checking.Write the right answer on the WB and get them see the fact that the answer is just hidden in the title.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Give your instruction to the Ss in short and clear way using''Imparative+please.'':''Read the article again and put the sentences a-d in the gaps 1-4,please.''Do it individually,please.'' ''Do we work in pairs?(No,individually).Give the Hand-out 2 (Material 2) containing four sentences to fill in the gaps in the text given in the previous activity.Get some Ss write the possible answers on WB.Then,check the answers on the WB as True or False.Use (T) for True (F) for False.If there are some wrong answers ask Why or Why not?Clarify and explain them by eliciting from the Ss.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Set the students in pairs.Give your instruction to the Ss in short and clear way using''Imparative+please.'':Discuss these questions in pairs,please.''Give the Ss Hand-out 3 (Material 3) containing three questions ''1-)Is marriage changing in your country? How? 2-) At what age do people usually get married? 3-) What are the advantages and disadvantages of getting married?''.Stick these questions on the WB,door and the wall of the class .Get them stand up after the pair work and Get them mingle and share their own answers for the questions with their friends in front of the questions like in an art gallery.Ask three different Ss and take one answer for each question instead of WC checking.Give FB on the content and language accuracy just about a few words phrase or sentences you heard briefly.
