Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide gist and detailed reading practice from a text about famous athletes and supporters' sporting superstitions and to clarify unknown vocabulary(word blockers).
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide controlled and free productive speaking skill excercises; the first for accuracy and the latter for fluency in the context of superstitions.
Procedure (38-50 minutes)
T will put images related to superstitions on OHP. T will ask SS to discuss in pairs what they think the images are. T will ask each pair to share their thoughts relating to the images. Once superstition is elicited, T will ask SS "what do we call someone who believes in superstitions?" If T can not elicit, they will write the last 4 letters "ious' to try and get them guessing. T will elicit word stress from SS. T will model and choral drill.
T will have images on the OHP of images in colour corresponding to HO given to SS. Each SS will receive a HO with pictures and word that they need to match. SS will work in pairs. FB will be given from the SS, they will come to the WB and mark the correct answer. T will clarify using CCQ' to verify if SS understood. T will model words and choral drill.
T will show HO to SS, will tell them that the first sentence of each paragraph is missing. SS need to match the sentences with paragraphs. SS will read the sentences before reading the text. SS will work alone for this task and will then compare with a partner. SS will come to the WB to give FB by writing their answers. T will clarify if any mistakes.
T will put a question on the WB and ask SS to read the text again carefully and to answer the question providing examples from the text. They will do this alone. They will compare answers with a partner. T will ask SS the correct answer.
T will divide partners into a's and b's. They will each receive a different picture. They will take turns guessing what the sports superstition of the athlete is. The crazier the better. T will ask SS what they think they are and do error correction. T will try different methods of error correction: Offer choices, ask a question, reformulation. T will then hand the SS the text that goes with the picture. SS will quickly go over it and tell their partner what they have discovered.
T will have SS divide in groups of 3. SS will discuss together their opinons about superstitions. T will give examples " are you superstitious before an exam? Do you have a ritual for good luck? ... T will monitor the discussion and take down notes of recurring mistakes. T will do DEC on WB.
