Description

In this lesson students will read a text about a man smuggling suitcases for years. They will answer 7 questions about the text and then they will write the missing paragraph with their own words.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about a man smuggling suitcases for years in the context of travelling

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of missing paragraphs of the story in the context of travelling

Procedure

Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows a picture to Ss and asks; *What do they have in common, discuss with your partner. to set the context and to understand students' lexis about the context. Then T provides WHFB.

Pre-Reading (7-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible through teaching the needed vocabulary

Vocabulary to be taught is "border, smuggle, customs officer" Using the context as his lead-in, T asks some questions such as; What do you call the line that seperates two countries? (border) Who works at a border/an airport? Who checks travellers' bags? (customs officer) Taking a thing or a person from one country to another illegally is ______ (smuggle) After eliciting words T drills the words for a few times and writes them on the WB. Later T asks CCQs.

While-Reading #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist task

T shows the HO to Ss and says *Read quickly and choose the best title then T gives HOs to Ss. After that T wants Ss to check their answers in pairs then T nominates one student to give the answer and provides FB

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading task

T introduces 7 questions to Ss and says; *Read the text again and answer these questions. Then T wants Ss to check their answers in pairs and provides the answer key.

Post-Reading/ Writing (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T divides the class into groups of 4 and wants them to work together on this task. T says; *Write the missing paragraphs with your own words.Don't look at the original story. and gives HOs to Ss. After Ss finish doing the task, T wants each group to hang their story around the classroom. After that, T wants all Ss to stand up and check which story is the most similar to the original one. Later T does error correction on the WB.
