Subsidiary Aims

To provide accuracy and fluency in the context of smoking
Procedure (38-45 minutes)
At the beginning of the class, I will show the students two photos and try to elicit the words 'heavy smoker' and 'fine'. The students will be engaged in the topic and will be ready to go through the dialog.
The students will read a short dialog on the topic of smoking. Then they will answer some questions following the dialog to check if they have no difficulty understanding it. Then they will check the answers with their partners and some volunteers will answer the questions.
The students will read the dialog again and answer some questions related to grammar. In these questions they are asked to highlight the verbs used after some words such as 'start', 'ugly', 'silly', and 'quit'. By doing so they will be able to discover the new grammar which is on gerunds and infinitives. Then they will check the answers with their partners and some volunteers will go the board and write the answers.
Then the teacher will clarify the form and pronunciation by asking CCQs. They will also be some repetition drills to make sure the students have no difficulty pronouncing the sentences.
At this stage the students will ask some questions related to the grammar they have just learned. They will see some verbs in parentheses and will be asked to complete some sentences by writing the correct form of the verb in the gaps. Then they will check the answers with their partners and then some volunteers will go to the board and write the correct answers.
At this stage, the students will be given a piece of paper with some questions. They will go around the class and ask and answer each other the questions. Then they will share their experiences with the class.
At this stage, the students will be given a set of incomplete sentences and will be asked to talk with their partners and complete them using their own words. They will be given a chance to produce the target language based on their personal ideas. Then they will tell the class about their partners.
