In this lesson, Ss will learn how to talk to a police officer through a listening activity and they will practice it through a speaking activity

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of language used for asking a police officer for help and giving advice in the context of a conversation between a police officer and a civillian

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in the context of a conversation between a police officer and a civillian

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows two pictures which are cropped and asks Ss what they think about those pictures. T says *Where are they? *What are they talking about? T wants Ss to work in pairs. After that, T provides WHFB and shows some phrases on the WB. T wants Ss to make a list of things they might say to a police officer and wants Ss to use the phrases on the WB in groups.

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide a model of functional language expected in coming tasks through listening

T shows the pictures to Ss and says *Listen to two conversations and match them to the pictures. T plays recording 1.75-1.76 and provides WHFB afterwards.

Exposure #2 (4-5 minutes) • To provide a model of functional language expected in coming tasks through listening

T says; *Read questions first. *We're going to listen to two conversations and choose the correct answer. and gives HOs to Ss. T plays Recording 1.75 and 1.76. After Ss listen to the conversations T wants them to check their answers in pairs and provide WHFB by nominating students one by one.

Useful Language (6-8 minutes) • To highlight and clarify the items of functional language

T says *Look at these two questions and choose which sentences are the answer. and wants Ss to work in pairs. After Ss finish doing the exercise, T provides WCFB and checks for pronunciation mistakes. If it is needed, T also drills sentences.

Productive Task (5-7 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target functional language

T says *Work in pairs. *One of you is a police officer the other one is a tourist. *The tourist's wallet has been stolen. *The tourist will ask for help and the police officer will advise him to go to the police station and give tips about personal safety. T gives Ss Police Badge Pictures and monitors Ss carefully.If T finds it necessary, he provides the transcript of the listening as a model to help Ss about target functional language.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T wants pairs to come to the WB and roleplay their activity. After each group T gives FB and corrects Ss' errors.
