Procedure (28-45 minutes)
T shows a map of a place on HOP and asks Ss some questions such as 'what's this?', 'what can you see in this map?', and 'what's the name of the road?' and asks the learners to point to the map and show some places such as an internet cafe or a post office to familiarize the ss with the map and places. T asks Ss to stick the correct words next to each picture. T ,then, gives them WCF.
T sticks the picture of signs such as turn left, turn right, go straight on and elicits the meaning of these signs from SS by gesturing and asking CCQ questions like 'is it right or left?', ' Am I next to computer or behind the computer?'.
T asks learners to listen and follow the directions on the map. T uses an audio CD or a native speaker colleague to play or read the listening. T pauses after each part to simplify the listening .T models one example for class. After that, SS do it alone. T nominates one S to come to the whiteboard and follow the direction for FB. After that, T gives Ss the tape script to get them practice the text in close pair. T asks one SS to read the text and another one follow direction and T monitors them and give them delayed correction if necessary. T presents the question of 'Excuse me. Is there a........near here?' and model the intonation.
T gives Ss a controlled practice in which they have to ask a question from their partners including 'is there a ........ near here?' and another S says, "yes, go..... and turn....." or " I'm sorry. I don't know". They do it in pair. After that, T gives ss WCF. Then, T gives Ss a semi-controlled practice and divides Ss into groups of four. They do it in pair. T gives Ss A map A and Ss B map B, and so on. T asks Ss not to show each other their map. In their groups, Ss approach each other and ask for direction to one of places on their list, e.g. 'Is there a newsagent's near here?'. The Ss give the direction If she/he knows where it is,starting: Go out of the railway station ,Turn left. If the S doesn't know he/she says I'm sorry I don't know. They do it in pair. After that, T gives them feedback.
