To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of culture and happiness
Procedure (41-52 minutes)
-Project the Science of Happiness on white board. Have students fill in the blanks. -Tell them our subject today is Positive Psychology- the science of happiness.
-Assign Ss to work in pairs. They have 3 min. to discuss the questions in number 1. Discuss answers as WC.
-Set 2 minute time limit and ask Ss to read the first and last sentences of each paragraph and choose the best title in exercise 1. Go over answer as WC. -Set 6 minute time limit for reading and tell Ss to read the text match the summary sentences 1-7 to the paragraphs A-E. Ask what a summary sentence is. Ss first work alone, then check their answers in pairs. *Make sure Ss know it's not important they understand every word, but for them to try to get the general idea of each paragraph. -Write answer key on white board.
-Assign Ss groups of 3. Have them read the text again and match find the words in the text that match the definitions. Draw their attention to the fact that the paragraphs where each word can be found is listed next to the definition. They have 10 minutes for this. Show students photo to help clarify meaning of "glossy" and use CCQs for other vocab. -Have Ss write answers on white board to get feedback and discuss as WC.
-Assign Ss groups of 3 or split the class in half, depending on the number of Ss. Have them look at the list and see if they understand the criteria. Ss rate them from 1 (most important) to 7 (least important). Encourage them to come to a group consensus and if they disagree, explain why to their groupmates. -Speaking exercise 2. First have Ss decide on 3 countries where they'd like to live while considering the list from number 1. Have them discuss what they know about the countries using the categories from number 1. Where would they be the happiest?
If time permits, have Ss work in pairs to discuss the questions in exercise 5 from HO 1
