Description

In this lesson students improve different reading skills such as reading for gist, reading for meaning from context, predictive details, and specific details. Learners will learn some vocabulary items to do the productive reading and speak by activating the schemata. The lesson starts with a speaking activity which is matching and a discussion. Then it will be followed by an article which works on reading for gist, reading for checking meaning from context, and reading for specific details. .

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, reading to check the meaning from context, predictive reading, and detailed reading practice using a text about Trading ages in the context of a reading text on aging.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide and support learners with activating the schemata and improving speaking to support learners in order to do the productive reading.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will ask them to write two adjectives which describe teenagers and elderly people. After having the feedback the teacher asks learners to do an activity and categorize some words which are related to teenagers and adults. Then the teacher will do the feedback. The teacher asks students to work in pairs and discuss 3 questions about the adjectives they had categorized and the elderly people and teenagers. Then pairs are going to give feedback on what they have talked about.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

A picture of the teacher is shown to the students to guess who he is and if he is that old. Then the photo of Nick Sydney and Karoline Bell is shown to them in order to help them read the text and check what has happened to them. After giving feedback by them, learners are asked to read the first paragraph with a partner and say what each word means.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with predictive reading

Learners are asked to read three questions about what has happened in the TV program and talk about them with a partner. Then they will read the text and check their predictions. The learners will come to the board to show the answers of each question.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Nine sentences are given to the learners to read the text again and then decide each of these nine sentences are related to Karoline, Nick, or both. Then learners do the activity in two groups and the feedback will be done on the board.
