Description

In this lesson the students will learn some vocabularies about jobs. They will listen to two people one of whom is talking about their family and showing the other one some family pictures. By the end of this lesson the students will be able to talk about and introduce their family members to each other.

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher will refer back to the family tree on page 16 and focus on Kate.

Pre-Listening (2-3 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening and make it accessible

The teacher will explain that Kate has a new boyfriend and will ask the Ss to look at the three photos and make guesses on them and the teacher will give feedback.

Gist Listening (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

The teacher will play the recording once and will ask the Ss to put the pictures in order and then to check answers with a partner.

Pre-teaching Vocabulary (1 minutes) • To make the students familiar with some words in the listening

The teacher will pre-teach the words 'retired' and 'lawyer' using pictures an will ask CCQs as follows: retired: Do they work? Are they young or old? lawyer: Do they work in a court or in a hospital?

Detailed Listening (5-6 minutes) • To provide students witha more challenging listening task

The students will go to part 9c, will listen again and circle the right answer. If needed, the teacher will play the recording again. Then, the students will check answers with a partner and the teacher will give them feedback. To provide them with feedback and in order for the students to be more active, the teacher will ask them to go to the board and circle the correct answers.

Vocabulary Focus (10-12 minutes) • To etach the students some job-related lexis

The teacher will highlights the jobs from the exercise 9c and will ask the students to write down as many jobs as they know in one minute. The teacher will introduce some more job-related lexis to the students using pictures. Meanwhile, the teacher will ask them to repeat the words after her and will also point out the correct stressed syllables. Then the teacher will ask some CCQs to make sure the students have no difficulty understanding the words. The CCQs are as follows: unemployed: Does he have a job? manager: Is he rich or poor? doctor: Where does a doctor work? teacher: Where does a teacher work? engineer: Did study at university? cleaner: What does a cleaner do? builder: Is it usually a man or a woman? waiter: Where does a waiter work? Is it usually a man or a woman? waitress: Where does a waitress work? Is it a man or a woman? actor: Does he act in films or make films? Is it usually a man or a woman? actress: Does she act in films or make films? Is it a man or a woman? Then the teacher will give the students some handouts with pictures of the new words and will ask them to match the new words with the pictures. Then the teacher will give them the feedback.

Controlled practice (4-5 minutes) • To make sure the students are able to use the new vocabulary items

The teacher will have the students choose three jobs that people in their family do. Then the teacher will have the students mingle until they find another person whose family member has the same job. The the students should sit down with their new partners.

Freer Practice (10-12 minutes) • To enable the students to exchange information about their families

The teacher will ask the students to write the names of some family members on a piece of paper. They shouldn't write any information about them. Then they will change papers with their partners. Their partner should ask some questions about the people on the paper. Then the teacher will change the pairs using color pieces of paper and will get them to tell the new partner about the previous ones.
