Description

In this lesson students will learn how to use narrative verbs form in the context of describing a natural event and how you feel about that experience.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of narrative verb forms in the context of talking about a natural event and describe a dramatic experience

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about describing a dramatic experience in the context of natural events
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a describing a dramatic experience in the context of natural events

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Ss 6 pictures of natural events. ask Ss which ones do they know. Have them discuss as a pair for 2 minutes. pass to next page in ppt and have them look at the words. Elicit from students which picture is what. Pass to next page in ppt and have students think about the question again as a pair and elicit a few answers

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Tell student they will listen to Fran and Antonio talk about their experiences with natural event and they should listen what kind of event they describe and answer the question from the board. Open next page on ppt. Have ss listen and discuss as groups or 3 people or as a pair. Elicit answers from students. Listen again and give to groups a handout with questions related to Fran and Antonio. Give them 4 minutes time and after have them tell each other the answers as pairs.

Highlighting (4-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

open grammar ppt and ask students CCQs to help them understand the timeline of each past form. Which verb tells us about a finished action or event in the past? Past simple regular ending –ed (hit) Which verb explains the background to a past action or event? Past progressive was/were + ing (was living) Which verb tells us that an event happened earlier than another event? Past perfect had+ past participle(had been).

Clarification (10-14 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Use a timeline and have students highlight where each time starts, finishes, finds itself. do a form analysis The tsunami hit. S+ verb past form Past progressive/continuous I was living in Sri Lanka. S+ was/were + present participle( V-ing) (auxiliary be past form) Past perfect There had been an earthquake. Had+ past participle( vb to be) + S ( auxiliary verb Have past form) Drill pronunciation. Highlight stress if need it

Controlled Practice (11-14 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Use handout with different stories to have SS correct the forms of verbs from each of them. Check their answers as a pair and monitor their answers. Give answer key individually.Ask for any question and give feedback for errors you noticed during monitoring.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

have Ss think of a natural event they were impressed by and tell it to each other as pairs.Give a personal example.Check by asking:Were you affected or impressed by any natural event? Did you hear about any natural event happening? What happened? What did you feal to hear or experience that? Think for 1 minute and tell each about it. Monitor and help if necessary
