Main Aims

To give students practice in speaking for fluency in the context of discussing different cultural attitudes to success.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To give students practice in listening for gist and detail. To allow students to distinguish and pronounce the different phonemic sounds for the letter O in the context of adjectives used to describe attitudes to success
Procedure (42-49 minutes)
Play hangman on the board to ascertain the topic of the lesson. Students call out letters and I fill them in on the board until the word appears. Attitude is my thoughts and feelings about something which shows in my behaviour. I played football last year to raise money. I wanted to win. My attitude to success was that I wanted to reach my goal. If I work really hard at work is this a positive or a negative attitude to success? Positive If I like my boss at work will I have a positive attitude to success? No
Look at the pictures of the 2 people. Read the questions and think how these people would answer in pairs. Elicit a couple of ideas from students.
Listen to Mariama and Remco talking about their attitudes to success. What do they think of aiming for a goal. Answer the questions and see if you were correct. Peer check- check your answers with your partner. Monitor for pronunciation errors. Feedback - Nominate students to give answers.
Read the questions and think about the answers. Are they true or false? Listen again and find out Peer check- change partners and check the answers Feedback- Answer keys on the wall. Go and check your answers against the answers on the wall. How did you do? Any that you had problems with? From the listening, who said each sentence? Mariama, Remco or the Interviewer. Do the first one as an example. Work in pairs. Monitor. Feedback- Elicit answers from nominated students.

On your own look at the quiz questions about attitudes to success and think about your answers. If you need any help with words just ask me. Monitor for any lexis help needed and correction errors. Now in groups talk about your answers. Do you have the same attitudes to success? Do you think people in different countries have different attitudes to success. Monitor for error corrections. Elicit answers to the round-up questions from a student in each group.
