Description

In this lesson the students will learn some vocabulary related to holidays, they will also read the texts (in groups) about other people's holidays and do certain exercises. Finally they will practice the vocabulary in the context of their own holidays.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information reading practice using three texts about holidays.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in the conversation in the context of summer holidays by using new vocabulary.

Procedure

Warmer/ Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set the lesson context and engage students.

I will start the lesson by displaying the turkish flag and another picture of a woman who thinks of Turkey. The point is to elicit from students what other people think first when they hear about Turkey. If students can't remember much, they will be shown pictures but they will have to comment them as well. The point is to reach to the ''Summer holidays'' answer. When we reach this answer, the teacher will show the places that she have visited and will try to show her attitude to each place (3 place) by using gestures. After that the learners will be asked to pick their favourite holiday destination and describe shortly what's good and what's not in that specific place.

Pre-teach Vocabulary (1-2 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it understood.

The teacher will show 5 different pictures wof the vacobulary words. The teacher will use the MFP sequence and CCQs to verify the meaning. After that the teacher will show students empty pictures (without the word on them) and ask students to spell the word.

Lead-in to reading (1-1 minutes) • To provide students with the idea of which cities they are going to read

The teacher will stick three pictures , the students will be given strips with the names of those cities. Their task will be to match them.

Gist Reading (1-1 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging reading

The students will be given 3 different texts, (group of three people) they skim the text and match it with the city.

Gist Reading (1-2 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging reading

This time the students will scan the text , their task will be to find 4 key-words and mark them. The teacher will modle the task as well.

Detailed Reading (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading.

The teacher will get the students in groups and hand out 3 questions to each group. they will read and then answer. The teacher will monitor each group. And then provide the groups with the answer keys.

Post-Reading task (5-6 minutes) • To provide speaking practice based on the text.

The teacher will stick three texts on the board (A3) Two students from each group will change their places with another two students. In such a way, each group will have 1 person who had already answered the question of his text and already knows what the text is about. Now the task is to get those two new students read the text and answer three questions, the students who has the questions will know and check the answers. The students will be standing near the board and read.

If-time Activity/ Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with speaking practice based on the texts.

The task will be to retell the text. Each students out of three will have to retell, one will start, the other one will continue and the last student will finish the text. The teacher will give students time to prepare.

Freer practice (8-11 minutes) • To provide students with speaking practice in the context of summer holidays

To set the context the teacher will display the pcitures of her own holiday last summer. Each picture will be supported by the notes above, the teacher will get one student to read them. Finally, there will be a slide with certain questions, how to build the dialogue. It is done in order to get students use the target language. The students will work in pairs, they will share their memories of last holiday and add their plan for this summer.
