Description

In this lesson, the students will be exposed to a reading in the context of "the longest bus ride". After gaining some new vocabulary, they will work on their reading skills.

Procedure

Ice-breaker (2-2 minutes) • GTKYS

Meet the ss.

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks ss: I want to go from Beşiktaş to Kadıköy. Which is faster? Bus or Ferry? (If needed T elicits ferry) I want to go from Şişli to Levent? Which is easier? Metro or Metrobus? (If needed T elicits subway) I want to go from Istanbul to Ankara? Which is cheaper? Train or Airplane? Which city is better? Istanbul or Ankara? Why?

Pre-Reading (4-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Instruction: I'll give you some pictures and some words. Match them in pairs. ICQ: Will you write anything? No. FB: T shows the pictures one by one and gets the answers WC. After each answer T drills the word, shows the stress and asks CCQs: "Give me a mountain name you know" (Ağrı, Himalaya...) "How many bridges are there in Istanbul?" "What are their names?" (2/3: FSM, Bosphorus, Yavuz Sultan Selim) "Are there tall buildings in the village or in the city?" (City) "Are there chicken, sheep and grass in the village or in the city?" (Village) "Do you know Tarzan?, Where did he grow up?" (In a jungle) "Give me names of famous buildings you know in Istanbul" (Galata Tower, Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia...) "What's the weather like in a desert?" (Hot, dry)

While-Reading #1 (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

T elicits&drill: Journey: "I go from one place to another... Maybe by car, bus, train or ship. What is called? Going to a place, maybe for a holiday...?" CCQ: What was the last time you had a journey to seaside? Backpacker: "What's the person who travels round the world and stay in cheap hostels? CCQ: Are you a backpacker? Passenger: "Who is the person in a journey?" Inst: Read the introduction and tell me. What is Ozbus? ICQ: Will you read the whole text? (No) FB: WC Inst: Work in pairs. What do you want to know about the Ozbus. Write a question using the words you choose. You have 3 minutes. T gives small folded papers to each pair and lets them choose among these: price, sleep, people, food, sights Inst: Read the article. Find the answers for your questions? You have 2 minutes. Peer Check. FB: T nominates ss who could find an answer to her/his question.

While-Reading #2 (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Inst: Underline the important words for each question. T does the first one with the ss, WOB. FB: Ss are nominating each other for each statement's keywords. Inst: Look at the text and find out if they are true or false. Write T for true. ICQ: And F for? (False) Peer check FB: T writes the answers on the board

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T regroups strong and weaker ss together. Inst: Would you like to go on the Ozbus? Why/Why not? Discuss in pairs. Monitoring: take notes of errors and encourage weaker ss to talk about the reasons Delayed FB. If time left, ss summarize their reasons.
