To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about things to do in Amsterdam in the context of tourism.

Procedure (39-50 minutes)
T shows a picture related to tourism and Ss predict context of the lesson. WCFB
T displays picture of Amsterdam and Ss guess the city. Ss are paired and discuss "What do you know about Amsterdam?" ICQs: How much time do you have? [3 minutes] WCFB T displays visuals/words on WB and elicits meaning from Ss. CCQ and drill pronunciation.
T distributes Gist Reading HO and Ss fold the HO at the line. T models first and second gist tasks. T distributes Reading Text. Ss attempt gist tasks individually. ICQs: How much time do you have? [30 seconds] Can you read everything? [No] WCFB T explains and models first scan reading task. Ss attempt scan reading task in pairs. Will you work alone or together? [together] How much time do you have? [4 minutes] T displays answers on WB and goes through answers with WC.
T re-groups Ss. T distributes Detailed Reading HO and explains and models T/F task. Ss cannot refer to the text. Ss attempt task in groups. ICQs: Can you look at the text? [NO] Will you work alone or in groups? [In groups] How much time do you have? [6 minutes] Ss refer to text to check answers. WCFB
If Ss complete Detailed Reading stage ahead of time, distribute If-time activity HO and Ss attempt task in pairs. ICQs: Will you look for words with these meanings? [Yes] Where can you find the words? [In the text] How much time do you have? [3 minutes] WCFB
T distributes Istanbul Travel Guide HO to Ss. T tells Ss that a tourist is coming to class and she needs information about Istanbul. T models task and Ss work in groups to discuss and fill in HO. Will you discuss? [Yes] Will you work in groups? [Yes] Can you write your ideas? [Yes] T walks into class pretending to be a tourist. Ss suggest places to see and things to do. Each group shares what they've discussed with the tourist.
