Description

In this lesson Ss learn about vocabulary used for health and illnesses.

Main Aims

  • To test and clarify ( if necessary ) illnesses and medical conditions vocabulary items in the context of body and health

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency in the context of body and health

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

A short video will be shown to the class that sets the topic of the lesson, the teacher will then the Ss will be asked whether they always go to a doctor if they catch a cold or they remedy it at home.

Test #1 (6-9 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of some lexical set in the context of body and heath

T will distribute a HO among Ss.they will categorize the given words (first individually then to be checked with their partners) into three different groups ( words they know ,words they may know and those they don't know at all.) T will monitor and put words on the board.

Teach (9-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning of those words students had difficulty in the first test stage

Firstly,each group will choose a word from the board, discuss and agree on the meaning together and give the explanation to the class. Then T will clarify those words Ss may have problem understanding them. Note: if all Ss know the meaning of all words, this stage will be followed by speaking task in which T will just show them the usage of (has got= 's got ) and ask them to use the words and expressions. If there was no need for a prolonged clarification, a longer speaking task will be performed and it will be followed by a vocabulary game.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' know the meaning of the words again and compare with the first test

T will give them the the second HO to check if they can do the exercises or not.

Speaking Practice (8-10 minutes) • to provide students with free practice of the target language

Before the practice begins, the Ss are shown the usage of "has got" in terms of talking about illnesses and diseases. Ss will then talk about the last time they went to the doctor, what the problem was, if the doctor gave them any prescription, and if they took any time off work, in pairs and then in groups.

Fill-In (3-5 minutes) • To review the words again and correct the errors

The main focus of this section is on error correction. However, if most of the Ss are already familiar with most of the vocabulary items presented, there will be more time at hand and a speaking game will be used to review those words.
