Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • The subsidiary aim of this lesson is speaking which is to give students a chance to have some productive practice related to their main aim (receptive skill).

Procedure

Lead in (4 minutes) • The aim of this stage is to activate students' schemata and prepare them to learn new vocabularies.

Write on board 'what's your favorite month?'. Wait for them to think for a few seconds then put them to work in pairs and ask each other the question. while they are discussing monitor them and see if they are all on task. When they finish ask some of them the question.

Pre- Teach Vocabulary (8 minutes) • To introduce the new vocabularies and make the students interested in the words and phrases about dates

Give them hand outs, in their handouts they have ordinal numbers and the written form of the numbers. Ask them to work in pairs/groups to match the numbers with written form of them. While they are on task monitor them closely. When they finished ask them to check their answers with other pairs and groups. At the end give them answer key to check how many right answers they have got. At the end of the stage drill the ordinal numbers chorally and individually (specially the difficult ones).

Vocabulary Practice #1 (10 minutes) • This to provide students with an opportunity to practice the ordinal numbers and to be familiar or have review on the month of the year.

Give each student a tag with an ordinal number from first to twelfth and the related month of the year written on it. Take them out, make a circle and start ball game with them. Start the game by saying your month then choose a number and throw the ball toward him/her. He/she catches the ball and repeats his or her month loudly and then he/she choose another number and throws the ball towards him/her. They practice telling the month of the year while they throw the ball to each other. Then bring them back to the class give them handouts to answer the questions, while they are on task monitor them and help them if needed. Put them in groups to check their answers. At the end give them a quick feedback.

Vocabulary Practice #2 (8 minutes) • To give students a chance to expand their knowledge of vocabularies related to dates and month.

Give them handouts to match the dates with the written form of them. Put them in pairs and give them instruction. while they are on task monitor them and help them if needed. when they finished put them in groups for further checking. At the end give them a quick feedback to make sure about their answers.

Vocabulary Practice #3 (10 minutes) • To provide them with a more challenging exercise to practice more alternatives for writing the dates.

Put students in pairs and give them clear instructions. Ask them to write the dates in a different way. Do one as an example. While students are on task monitor them and check if everyone is involved. When they finished put them in groups to check their answers again. At the end give them a quick feedback.

Follow-Up (5 minutes) • To provide an opportunity for the students to develop their speaking skills and expand their knowledge on the vocabularies they have learned.

Give students some questions about an important date such as their birthday to walk around the class and ask each other. While they are speaking monitor them and take notes about possible mistakes they might have during the activity.
