Description

In this lesson, students will learn and practice functional language used in arranging to meet people. Students will be exposed to the target language through a recording about arranging to meet a friend and do controlled fluency speaking practice, as well as freer practice in the context of arranging to meet people they've encountered at a party.

Main Aims

  • To practice listening for gist and specific information in the context of arranging to meet a person. To engage in fluency speaking practice in the context of arranging to meet people.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T displays context-setting visual. Ss work in pairs to predict what the lesson and TL is about. Bring Ss attention to question marks in visual and elicit the aim of the lesson from them. Instructions: Talk to your partner (gesture to form pairs) about what today's lesson is about. You have one minute.

Listening - exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a recording

T hands out Listening HO and asks Ss to focus on upper table (get Ss to fold HO to focus on 1st task). Ss go through table and are instructed to listen to the recording and choose the correct answer in HO. ICQs: Will you write anything? [No] Are you listening for the correct answer (point to choices on HO)? [Yes] Ss are instructed to listen to recording again for Clare's answers. After listening, Ss fill in 2nd task in Listening HO. Ss check answers in pairs. Display answers on WB after pair-checking. Are you listening for questions or answers? [answers] Can you write? [No] When will you write? [After listening]

Highlighting (6-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ss are asked to point out: what Ling "wants" in the conversation between Ling and Clare. T highlights TL "let's meet" based on feedback from Ss. Ss asked to point out the questions in the conversation between Ling and Clare. Then Ss asked to point out the answers to the different questions. Based on Ss feedback, T first underlines then writes the questions and answers (marker sentences) in different colors on the side of WB for use in upcoming stages. CCQs: What does Ling want to do? / Why is he calling Clare? [to meet] Is Clare busy or free (point to Clare's 1st response)? [busy] Where does Ling want to meet? [Cafe Metro] Is "how about" = "how are you?" [No] (erase ''how are you" and replace with "?" wait for Ss' suggestions) T enacts meaning of "how about" to mean giving a suggestion. T plays role of being a customer at a restaurant and being offered various choices of food and drink by the waiter (also played by T) by using sentences like "how about tea?" "how about doner kebab?" AND/OR Write 'How about ______ ?' = 'Is _______ OK?' and fill gap with time, place, day, etc.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of TL

T displays Speaking practice HO on WB with gap-fills and elicits prepositions from Ss. Illustrate at vs. in using circle with a dot within: outer circle for general/larger area ("in"), inner dot for specific place ("at"). Elicit examples of places. Draw timeline with 8 am - 12 pm. Elicit time of day from Ss (morning). Write "__ the morning" and elicit preposition ("in"). Mark a specific time on timeline and put a blank with "?" for preposition "at". T models and drills pronunciation of TL with WC. 2-3 Ss use TL on WB to practice short conversations with T. CCQ: Can we say "in" 10 o' clock? [No] Can we say "at" the morning? [No] Can we sa "at" Pasa Doner restaurant? [Yes] Can we say "in" Sisli? [Yes]

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for more meaningful practice

T distributes speaking practice HO and groups Ss in pairs. T directs Ss to use questions on WB (taken from listening activity). Ss have short conversations using TL in pairs, taking turns to ask and answer. ICQs: How will you talk? [in pairs] Who will ask first? [A] Who will answer? [B] Who will ask next? [B] Who will answer? [A]

Pre-activity preparation (2-3 minutes) • To prepare students for free practice

Ss write down a place + time and day when they are free. (T gives personal example of this on WB). Instructions: On the back of this paper (speaking practice HO), write down a: 1) day and time when you are free 2) a place you like to go to in Istanbul (restaurant, cafe, shop, etc.)

Mingling Activity (8-12 minutes) • To provide students with fluency speaking practice

T tells Ss they are all going to a party and have to arrange to meet people using what they have written down. T models task by having a conversation with 2-3 Ss till a meeting is confirmed (show they have try arranging to meet various people). T sets party scenario by placing snacks and playing background music. Ss mingle to try and arrange to meet various people. ICQs: Can you try to meet anyone? [Yes] Will you try to meet only one person? [No] What will you use when you talk? [Qs on WB and ideas written on paper] Feedback: Nominate Ss and ask them who they've arranged to meet. Ask "where are you meeting?" "at what time?" "for what?" and correct any errors in MPF.
