Teaching Plan 3B
A2 level

Description

This lesson will consist of students learning about horoscopes, focussing on vocabulary; specifically adjectives relating to star signs. The students will have various activities to provide clarification of meanings of said adjectives, with an exercise showing the transition to nouns of said adjectives near the end of the lesson. There will be CCQs and whole class feedback provided at each stage of the lesson, providing clarity and understanding of what the students have learned.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide students with vocabulary (primarily adjective, secondarily nouns) in the context of horoscopes and star signs.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To elicit and develop pronunciation skills of the students in relation to horoscopes, their adjectives and the nouns of said adjectives.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The lead-in will begin with the teacher giving four examples (myself & 3 CELTA course-mates) of which star sign we are and will read a brief character trait of each star sign. Teacher will ask students in WCFB setting if they agree with the brief statements made.

Lead-in Follow up (4-6 minutes) • To set the context of the lesson - Horoscopes

Teacher will give handout to students, testing their memory from the first part of the lesson; asking them to write down the names of each star sign symbol provided on the handout. Teacher will use whole class feedback to elicit correct answers from students, providing error correction if necessary. Students may work individually or in pairs.

Exposure to vocabulary (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with context of adjectives and nouns.

Teacher will draw Emre the lonely stick-man (Emre has no friends) on the whiteboard, with two model sentences - 'Emre is very ...(lonely)' and 'His biggest problem is...(loneliness)'. Teacher will elicit answer for the first sentence, and will try to elicit an answer for the second question, showing the transition between said adjective and noun.

Useful Language (4-6 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful adjectives and meanings in the context of horoscopes

Teacher will provide students with handout where they will work in pairs to match key adjectives to the meanings provided, providing clarity for the meaning of each adjective. WCFB will follow up providing drill practice, clarification of any questions and error correction.

Task 3 (6-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice reading for key adjectives.

This task will consist of students receiving a handout with brief descriptions of each star sign, with students working in pairs to read through the text and work out the answers to the questions provided on each sheet. The questions consist of looking for adjectives in said text and writing down the names of which star sign goes with question. WCFB will follow to clarify any questions, meaning of words and error correction.

Task 4 (8-10 minutes) • To give the students freer practice in vocabulary

This task will consist of students receiving a handout with brief descriptions of each star sign, with students working in pairs to read through the text and work out the answers to the questions provided on each sheet, which will consist of finding the nouns for each adjective provided. WCFB will follow to clarify any questions, meaning of words and error correction.

Follow up exercise (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with an opportunity to expand on what they've learned

In pairs, students will be asked to work in pairs, discussing their own star signs from the texts provided in previous handouts, asking each other if they think their horoscope is relevant to their personality; sharing similar traits. From here, the whole class will work together to find out if any students feel differently to their horoscope, and if they think another one defines them better.
